How we transported a 10-meter helicopter from Norway to Brazil: A project logistics case

When it comes to transporting oversized cargo, like a helicopter that’s over 10 meters long and weighs 2.5 tons, standard solutions just won’t solve it. Here’s how we helped one of our customers with project logistics – transporting a helicopter from Norway to Brasil, using both sea and road transport.

What is project logistics?

Project logistics involves careful planning, coordination, and handling of large, heavy, and specialized cargo that requires more than regular transportation methods. It often involves unique challenges such as special handling requirements, route planning, and securing necessary permits. In this case, we were tasked with transporting a 10-meter-long helicopter weighing 2.5 tons.

Our approach to this project

  • Domestic Transport: The journey began in Hønefoss, Norway, where the helicopter was carefully loaded onto a specialized low-bed container truck. Due to the height and specific road limitations between Hønefoss and Oslo Port, this special truck was essential.
  • Sea Freight: From Oslo Port, the helicopter was shipped to Itapoa Port in Brazil, with a transit stop in Germany.

In this project we cooperated with our trusted partner A.F.L nv (Allround Forwarding and Logistics nv).

Overcoming challenges

While this shipment didn’t present any unusual challenges, attention to details was crucial. We ensured that all dimensions and weights were accurate and that the cargo was securely lashed and fastened to prevent any issues during transit, especially during the stopover in Germany.

Project logistics planning and preparation

  1. Selecting the best suitable carrier: We evaluated multiple carriers to find the optimal solution that offered the best combination of reliability and cost-effectiveness.
  2. Defining shipping terms: We clearly defined the responsibilities of all parties involved to ensure a smooth process from start to finish.
  3. Securing necessary equipment: We arranged for specialized equipment and considered potential road conditions, such as bridges and tunnels, that could occur on the transport route.
