At Hecksher, as part of Greencarrier Group we have an ambitious goal – to be in the forefront of the transition toward fossil free shipping. It’s no small task, considering the shipping industry currently accounts for around three percent of global carbon emissions. However, Patrik Westraeus, our Head of Sustainability, is confident that this goal is both necessary and achievable.
“As a company, we want to grow, but that growth must not come at the expense of the climate. As part of the global shipping industry, our mission is to challenge not just ourselves, but also the industry and our customers, and to pioneer development in the right direction.” he says.
A milestone collaboration
The summer of 2024 marked a significant milestone for Hecksher as we launched Maritime Biofuel Insets, which Patrik describes as a potential game-changer for the industry.
“We had been searching for a solution to reduce both our own and our customers’ climate impact. This is a solution that offers the possibility to reduce total carbon emissions – and one we can offer to our customers straight away,” says Patrik.
Addressing scope 3 emissions
Many companies today are struggling to identify and reduce Scope 3 emissions – the indirect emissions that occur across the entire value chain. This is where Patrik believes Maritime Biofuel Insets open up a whole new opportunity.
“With Maritime Biofuel Insets, we provide the possibility to reduce fossil emissions in Scope 3 by up to 100 percent. It’s a simple, cost-efficient solution that makes a real difference in emissions. For you, this means that we extend a certificate for the corresponding amount of your desired reduction of your shipping emissions.”
Pioneering a new standard
At Hecksher, we view Maritime Biofuel Insets as the starting point for a larger shift within the industry. Increased demand for renewable fuel could create a ripple effect, establishing a market that doesn’t yet exist.
“Hecksher’s mission isn’t to follow developments, but to lead them. We want to challenge the status quo and set a new standard for what’s possible in fossil free shipping. That’s why Maritime Biofuel Insets are a significant step in the right direction, making a big difference – and available already today,” says Patrik Westraeus.
