From a chance opportunity in 1982 to more than 40 years in the logistics industry, Harald Thun has built a career centered around people, problem-solving, and long-term partnerships. Today, as Operational Business Development Manager at Hecksher Norway, he continues to help customers navigate complex logistics challenges while supporting the growth of the business. Here’s what he had to say about his journey and the lessons he’s learned along the way.
How did your journey into logistics begin?
I got into logistics almost by coincidence. After completing my military service in 1982, an opportunity arose at a freight forwarding company near Oslo Airport, and I decided to give the industry a try. More than 40 years later, I’m still here.
Throughout my career, I’ve held a variety of roles across the logistics sector, working for both large global companies such as Geodis and smaller, service-focused businesses like Hecksher. The industry has given me the opportunity to continuously learn, build strong relationships, and help customers find solutions to complex logistics challenges.
What does your role involve?
There’s no typical day in my role, which is one of the things I enjoy most. My focus is on building long-term relationships with both potential and existing customers, helping them find the right transport solutions by air, ocean, or road.
I also support our air and ocean freight teams with more complex customer requests and assist during busy periods to ensure we continue providing fast responses and excellent service.
What sets Hecksher apart in today’s logistics market?
Personal service. Our customers can reach a real person when they need us – not a call centre or answering machine. Accessibility, commitment, and strong relationships make all the difference.
Is there a project or customer collaboration that stands out?
I have a customer relationship that has lasted for more than 15 years, and I believe that’s one of the best indicators of a successful and mutually beneficial partnership. We manage all of their third-party shipments from Singapore to destinations around the world by both air and ocean freight, as well as their shipments to and from Norway.
One of the most memorable projects after joining Hecksher was supporting shipments to Doha, Qatar, ahead of the FIFA World Cup. Together with a long-time industry partner, we managed an airfreight charter and several ocean freight part-charters. It was more or less a 24/7 job at times, involving close collaboration with agents, suppliers, and subcontractors. Challenging, but incredibly rewarding.
What motivates you most about working in logistics today?
First and foremost, it’s the opportunity to meet new and interesting people. I enjoy finding solutions – either on my own or together with our skilled team in Norway – to exceed our customers’ expectations and build long-term partnerships.
Despite having spent many years in the industry, I still learn something new almost every day. It’s also motivating to make a difference and to see our office continue to grow year after year.
What advice would you give someone starting a career in logistics?
Logistics might not seem like the most glamorous industry, but no two days are ever the same. Be open-minded, embrace challenges, and always look for the best solution. Most importantly, deliver on your promises – and if possible, exceed them.
