Keeping freight moving: The vital role of road transport in modern logistics

In today’s fast-paced logistics landscape, road transport continues to play a critical role in keeping goods moving efficiently and flexibly across Europe. We spoke with Mathias Kardos, CEO at TCT, a company recently acquired by Hecksher with three decades of experience in the industry, to explore what makes road freight indispensable – and where it’s headed.

Speed, flexibility, and on-time delivery

“Road transport is often the best option when timing is tight,” Kardos explains. “Its biggest advantages are flexibility, short lead times, and reliable on-time delivery.” While other modes like sea or rail are essential for large volumes and sustainability, trucks remain the go-to solution for time-sensitive shipments – especially the so-called “last mile.”

Though TCT focuses primarily on road transport, being part of Hecksher now allows them to offer a broader range of services, including sea and air freight. ‘But for most of our customers, trucks are the backbone. And when something has to arrive tomorrow – it won’t get there without a truck,’ Kardos adds.

ADR and temperature-controlled goods: A niche of expertise

One area where TCT stands out is in the transport of ADR (dangerous goods), including temperature-sensitive and chemically reactive materials. “We’ve invested in the right equipment and ensure all our staff are thoroughly trained, so we can handle it with confidence and a high level of safety.”, Kardos notes.

They also manage temperature-controlled shipments – from paints that must not freeze in winter, to goods needing cooling in peak summer. “We use onboard sensors and apps to track temperatures in real-time. For some customers, a temperature deviation can trigger chemical reactions – so precision is everything.”

Sustainability and the challenge of change

Sustainability is top of mind in the industry. Kardos acknowledges that road freight still lags behind sea or rail in terms of emissions per unit, but notes a growing shift toward alternative fuels and intermodal solutions. “Electric and hydrogen-powered trucks are promising, but challenges like cost, charging infrastructure, and battery weight remain.”

TCT continuously tailors its offering to meet the unique logistics needs of each customer. “Every customer is different. We adapt our services and use our network to create the best-fit solution – every time.”, says Kardos.

Still, he points out a central dilemma: while nearly all customers talk about sustainability, few are willing to pay the premium it currently demands. “Until regulation or incentives shift, we’re stuck in a price-driven market.”

Another challenge: A shrinking workforce

“Finding skilled drivers is one of our biggest headaches,” Kardos says. “The driver population is aging, and younger people aren’t coming in fast enough.” Working condition reforms – like the EU’s Mobility Package – have also reshaped the industry.

“There’s a strong push for better driver welfare, like mandated rest periods outside the cab,” Kardos adds. “But it’s hard to enforce consistently. And when others bend the rules to cut costs, it puts pressure on everyone else.”

The market, the customers, the future

TCT’s core markets include Western and Central Europe, especially Germany, Austria, Benelux, and Italy. “We run all across Europe, even to places like Turkey and Kazakhstan. And we serve all types of clients – from chemicals to light e-commerce.”

When asked about competition, Kardos says: “We offer sustainable, reliable pricing – no surprises. Plus, we’re known for service and a personal touch. That still matters a lot.”

Looking ahead, Kardos sees further digitalization, longer-term contracts, and deeper customer integration. “Customers want stability and strong partnerships. We’re moving from short-term bookings to long-term planning.”

And what about AI? “It’s everywhere. Automation will help with admin, sure – but relationships still matter. You need both: digital tools and human trust.”
