To accelerate the transition to fossil-free fuels in the maritime sector, Swedish logistics company Hecksher, part of Greencarrier Group, is launching the ‘Shipping Made Fossil-Free’ campaign. As part of the initiative, Hecksher is offering businesses a free trial of its Maritime Biofuel Insets solution, allowing them to see firsthand how they can drastically reduce their shipping-related fossil emissions.

1,000 tonnes of biofuel insets available – free of charge

In the campaign, Hecksher is making 1,000 tonnes of Maritime Biofuel Insets available to customers on a first-come, first-serve basis. Companies can claim their biofuel inset by signing up via a form on Hecksher’s website. Once they’ve signed up and placed their next booking, Hecksher will automatically apply the biofuel inset to that shipment.

“We aim to raise awareness of how simple and accessible this solution is, while also helping our customers integrate it into their operations. This campaign invites our customers to be part of the transition by showing how easy it is to reduce emissions using Maritime Biofuel Insets. As a transport company, we not only have a responsibility to offer more sustainable solutions – we also have a role to play in actively driving the shipping industry toward a fossil-free future,” says Patrik Westræus, Head of Sustainability at Greencarrier.

Shipping Made Fossil-Free’ is fully funded by Greencarrier Group as part of its newly launched Greencarrier Blue Initiative, which supports concrete efforts to reduce the environmental impact of global shipping.

A simple switch with big impact – keeping long-term goals on track during uncertain times

Maritime Biofuel Insets allow companies to cut fossil CO₂ emissions by up to 100% by replacing conventional marine fuels with verified, renewable biofuels. Similar to how renewable electricity relies on the mass-balance principle, these insets ensure an equivalent amount of biofuel is used within the global shipping sector, even if it’s not directly on the vessel transporting a company’s goods.

Switching to biofuels for a container shipment is an affordable investment. For example, applying Maritime Biofuel Insets to a route between Asia and Europe would cost around €250 for an average TEU.

Taking responsibility – leading the way toward fossil free shipping

“As the political and policy world loses momentum – with the EU scaling back on CSRD and anti-sustainability sentiments gaining ground – it’s more important than ever for companies to step up, take responsibility, and accelerate the shift toward a fossil-free shipping industry,” says Patrik Westræus.

Hecksher’s Biofuel Insets campaign is more than just a free trial – it’s a step toward realizing the company’s vision of Creating a Sustainable Tomorrow, one shipment at a time.

About Maritime Biofuel Insets:

The biofuel used in the Maritime Biofuel Insets is produced from agricultural residues. After upgrading, it is distributed via the European gas network to terminals where it is converted into liquefied form (LBG). The biofuel is then transported for bunkering and used in shipping. The insets build on a book-and-claim-methodology.

How to apply for a biofuel inset:

To claim a biofuel inset, companies can sign up through the form on Hecksher’s website. Once signed up and after placing their next booking, Hecksher will automatically apply the biofuel inset to that shipment.

There’s no additional cost – it’s completely free for one shipment. Once the booking is completed, customers will receive documentation confirming the CO₂ reduction achieved through the shipment.
